How do I change the desktop environment?

#1 Post by Captain Brillo »

Can't find this in the user manual - can somebody point me to instructions for changing from XFCE to say Budgie or Mate?

MX-Package Installer > Desktop Environments
After installation, log out and log in back choosing your DE in the login screen.

Maybe too late now, but it is always a good idea to make a Timshift snapshot before any major changes to your system. In case anything go south you always can revert to a previously well functioning state. But perhaps you've got already some snapshots.

Thank you - I actually knew that...

Prefer Systemback, which MX still supports.
Whenever I've relied on Timeshift, there have been problems restoring systems. Never figured out why.

Good info! I didn't know that! I have been thinking these days to figure out how I could install Systemback on MX. Is it in the main repo?

I found it in the MX test repo - that's good enough for me.
And it seems to be running fine, although I haven't done a restore yet... :lipsrsealed:

I had a lot of problems with the last distro, which advocated for Timeshift, which always failed on me. Well, at least twice.
Since I found Systemback, I've not looked back. Too bad it's no longer being developed.
I like it so much I might even pay for it.

If it's any help, there's a guy on youtube running Mate and Budgie DE's on MX...If you go to @ 4minutes in, you will see the log-out/log-in process and how he swaps between desktops..
