Certainly this will be a very relevant discussion topic in due course in the Dev forum, but this is also my current opinion as an ordinary user of XFCE 4.13++.

I'm sure the knowledgeable amongst us will know how to mix and match both gtk2 and gtk3 elements of XFCE in MX, but I'm just saying that from my own experience, XFCE 4.13++ as a whole (not mixed with gtk2 XFCE elements) is not all there yet, IMO. Of course, the XFCE 4.13++ I'm using is continuously rolling and being updated, so that could be part of the problem.

I totally agree, just thought it more effective for you (a Dev) to utter that opinion as a Dev-to-Dev statement in a place where it could be found in the future.

So my opinion is MX shouldn't jump the gun and try to rush 4.14 into the distro, if it's not officially released yet. Let's wait patiently for it to be fully ready.

=1, probably better.
Am not a software dev but will MX look visually different when it transitions from GTK2 to 3? More attractive?
@Mystic, No big differences, and it's a good news for me. (Like MX17 to MX18)

When it's time, I will certainly pitch in with my opinions and experience.

On a related note, does anyone here use the current or previous Xubuntu with its mixed XFCE? What are your views?

Is theming very much different on this mixed XFCE? What about theming of whisker and the panel?

think when GTK3 is used for the DE, the personal settings will be stored in .config/dconf/user file, similar to Gnome3. I like the files in .config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml. Can manually edit this with a simple text editor. Not possible on GTK3 based DEs. The user-dconf file is a binary. Editing this file via dconf-editor or gsettings commands. Only one file for GTK3 based desktops and apps configuration.

That's the reason, why personal settings will be lost and you see the ugly adwaita icons and xfce standard layout when you update to 4.13++ or 4.14 when it comes.
for those with an eye for the finer details...

I agree with the comments here... before moving everything (I manage) to MX I used 4.13 for more than a year on manjaro. It worked well, unevenly, because of the way the pieces were 'rolling out (being converted). It did not look substantially different. Themes were a problem but they are on 4.12 as well (they are getting more scarce) because most new stuff is being designed for gtk3.

I agree with the new thread idea. What I always told my clients was "be explicit and intentional". MX has a history of that. I like it; and it is what makes things work so well here.

"Coming soon" if you interpret that as "nobody, including the developers, has any idea when it will be ready". :p

We'd also really like 4.14 to be in upstream Debian first. We learned that when 4.12 came out: the Xubuntu and PPA packagers made some mistakes or omissions in upgrading the libraries.

So.. "Coming VERY soon" basically applies to MX19?

We're fairly sure when that is ready after all ;)

If 4.14 were to magically be released in May and then appear in upstream Debian, I think we might push it in something like MX 18.5. But I'm not betting on that happening.
