What emits signals for monitor disconnect?

Not really an XFCE forum, but I thought I'd ask here. I'm trying to control XFCE freaking out every time a monitor temporarily disconnects. I want to block those XEvents, but I have spent considerable time trying to track down exactly what is responsible for this: XFCE, Xlib, some hardware monitoring daemon, etc....

Can anyone cut my search short? I just need to tell the system to not pay attention to monitor connect/disconnect for a few seconds. Not sure what is doing it.
