[solved] After awake from suspension, (XFCE4) session was not restored as it was

#1 Post by postcd »

Hello, in MX-17.1_x64, XFCE 4.x default, up to date system i clicked logout and then suspend. Then when i came back to computer after some minutes, i pushed power button. PC wake up and then everything seemed like the user session (sidebar, apps, high disk activity) is building up from scratch like after booting and it restored the session like it was last time i booted the system, not like it was before i clicked to suspend PC (in logout/suspend menu i use "Save session for future logins").

It was surprise to me that after this wake-up it not restored my web browser, 2 terminal sessions etc. seen FF message "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."

Code: Select all

System: Host: lynx Kernel: 4.15.0-1-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: Xfce 4.12.3
           Distro: MX-17.1_x64 Horizon March 14  2018
Machine: Type: Desktop Mobo: Gigabyte model: G31M-ES2L v: x.x serial: <filter> BIOS: Award v: FH
           date: 04/30/2010
CPU: Topology: Quad Core model: Intel Xeon E5430 bits: 64 type: MCP L2 cache: 6144 KiB
           Speed: 2671 MHz min/max: N/A Core speeds (MHz): 1: 2671 2: 2667 3: 2626 4: 2559
Graphics: Device-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Baffin [Radeon RX 460] driver: amdgpu v: kernel
           Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.2
I do not understand the things, but i tried to check some logs (as a n00b found nothing that would indicate problem):

$ ps auxf
https://pastebin.com/p5Q0TcQQ

$ sudo grep "Nov 3 12" /var/log/kern.log
https://pastebin.com/3AHV2JLg

I tried to suspend again via power button (Power manager sets "Suspend" (not Hibernate) as a function to it) and also via logout/suspend and it restored session OK. So not sure why that single session was missing Firefox and 2 of three terminal sessions that should have been there.

If anyone wish, let me know what to try to find out why that single session failed? I do not think it was electricity interruption because the computer would be booting, it was not..

So is this the first time you have tried to suspend, or has it worked in the past?

It worked before and it worked after
But it happened to me only this time/once that after awake couple of windows/apps (mentioned in my first post) was not there and user session appeared like it is starting a new instead of being already there saved in memory or in hdd.

Huh, thanks. I suggest you write that off as an anomalous event until it should happen again, and then we can dig down a bit.

On my system I found that a momentary press of the power button has suspend working correctly. If I press and hold the system reboots. I use the PS2 connected keyboard to resume from suspend.
