Hello all! I'm new to MX Linux and just installed on my Dell Inspiron 1720 and it runs fast. Yes, I booted Windows and decided to give Linux a try. Everything runs without error but I'm having one slight problem maybe someone can help me with. From the time I sign in to the desktop, it's almost 5 minutes till I can do anything. Everything freezes until the panel loads then I can go to work. Don't know much about this OS or how to troubleshoot.

Is this a problem or is it normal?

Nope - - that's definitely not normal - - is there any errors displaced during the boot ?.
- - any type of messages, at all ?.

Thanks for the reply Pierre - no messages and nothing display except the desktop without the panel. Once the panel displays, I can use the computer but it takes almost 5 minutes . . .

If you use the systemd boot option in the advanced GRUB options, does it make any difference?

If not, you can use the systemd-analyze tool to try and find what's taking the longest, or else use bootchart with the standard boot.

Until it's fixed, can you avoid rebooting by using suspend or hibernate?

Stevo - I tried the systemd boot option and it makes no difference. Also timed startup with a stop watch and from pushing the power button to system load is 6:17 minutes
Just a thought, does MX Linux handle an SSD well?

The User Manual says "avoid setting up a SWAP file on the SSD to avoid slowing it down." So how do I get rid of my swap partition and file? Can you just turn it off?

When you say "sign in", you mean the login page itself where you enter your password, right? It has nothing to do with bootup in that case, since you're already booted into the MX desktop manager page.

So:

1. please post text output of this command in the terminal:
This will give us your system and hardware information.

2. let us know if you have installed any other program in MX after installing it.
