Not really. If you start with the assumption that they are for updates, then okay. Otherwise they don't say "updates" on their own. Of course everyone will know what they represent pretty quickly, so it's not a problem, really. I guess it's just my feeling that icons should be a pictorial representation of what they're for.

I understand, but I am not sure a line and filled box screams updates either.
In any case we are talking about an option to the classic set, not a default.

The tick and exclamation mark icons are a very good hi-visibility set.

By the way, I use a blue box for Dropbox idle and a red pulsing box when it is sinking. An obvious connection to function. I never liked the default Dropbox notification icon.
