Mouse pointer stuck in centre screen

#1 Post by Toastrack » Wed Apr 29, 2015 5:17 am

On booting up my Mepis 11 (kept up to date) system today, every time I try to boot up, the mouse pointer refuses to move and I'm stuck with the only apparent option of ctrl-alt-del and hitting Return to shut it down again. I've checked the cable connectons etc and also that the mouse is working fine (it's on a kvm switch to this PC).
Today I'm told there are two updates ready, but I can not deal with these or do anything else to get the machine to respond apart from the shut-down mentioned above. :frown:

Just to be obvious here...have you replaced the battery (if it's wireless) or made sure it's plugged in? It just sounds like what my mouse does when the battery dies...

:crossfingers:

Never mind...re-read your post saying the mouse is fine...duh!
There are exceptions to every rule...

I'd suspect the KVM switch. A KVM can appear to be totally fine with Windows while being utterly flaky with Linux. What happens when you plug the mouse directly into the PC?

Ditto! KVM switches can cause a lot of problems.
Yes, even I am dishonest. Not in many ways, but in some. Forty-one, I think it is.

Yeah, many thanks to all who replied.

Ii's either the kvm switch or the cable, Mepis is fine now when I plug in a separate USB mouse. So, problem basically solved, now down to me to locate either kvm or cable etc.

I agree kvm switches are not well supported using OLD Linux kernels, especially the one used with M11. I had a most miserable time with my latest KVM when running M11, display was awful, mouse and kbd erratic, found a liquorix kernel and installed it, it was certainly better, but not sufficiently for my type of use with about 20 or more switches between 7 other computers on the same kvm per day.

My recommendation is to upgrade to a newer kernel and if one is not available for the now very old M11, I'd suggest upgrading to a later version OS.
