Unable to boot MX-18.3 from USB

#1 Post by hsl »

Hi-

I'm on a MacBook Pro (2014) running macOS Mojave (10.14.5), and I'd like to dual-boot with MX Linux (18.3).

I created a bootable USB from the MX-18.3 ISO using balenaEtcher in macOS. When I boot from that USB, I get the message:

"error: failure reading sector 0x80 from 'hd0'. Press any key to continue..."

Pressing a key to continue brings me to a menu with the following options:
  • MX-18.3 x64 (May 26, 2019)
  • MX-18.3 x64 Customize Boot (text menus)
  • Advanced Options for MX-18.3 x64
  • Memory Test
Choosing any of these options results in display of the aforementioned error message again, and subsequently back to the same menu.

I'd be thankful if anyone can offer me any guidance on how to proceed to the installation.

Thanks in advance!

Have you checked the download's checksum? Just to make sure that you don't have a botched download.

Also the install media, normally under F4 IIRC when that menu appears.

The other way to test the liveusb is to browse to /media/LiveUSB/antiX, open a terminal there and enter:

Code: Select all

cat *.md5 | md5sum -c
and check if it matches.

Our developer fehlix has created a little script that can make an iso file that should boot on an iMac. Please see this thread: Convert MX/antiX ISO's to an "Apple HFS/HFS+" ISO bootable on Mac's: iMac, MacMini, MacPro

Hi Eadwine - thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I did compare the checksums and the file integrity seems to be fine.

Following up on BitJam's suggestion now.

Thanks, BitJam. I'm having some issues with the script so I've posted on that thread.
