Dual boot not loading desktop after mx installation (solved)

#1 Post by LogicalEcology »

Greetings to the Forum!

I've installed MX Linux at the side of a ubuntu mate 18.04 by freeing some space on the disk, creating a new partition and installing from usb drive.
MX runs great, but since the installation i can't log into Mate any more.
I was suspecting grub at first and tried the repair, but that did not help. The strange this is that Mate loads until the login screen.
Also i can see and access my shared folders on the network, so the OS must have loaded. Also i can switch to a terminal and log in there.
I've used the terminal to create a new user and tried with that, same result.
I'm just looped back to the login screen.
So it seems just the desktop is not loading.
Any suggestions how i can repair that would be highly appreciated?
What logs can i view in the terminal to get more details?

Thanks, kind regards, Gero

Just a shot in the dark...without knowing anything about your configuration...any chance you installed MX using the same /home location as Mate? In other words, are you sharing the same /home with both MX and Mate?

From MX i have to mount the drive to access my home folder of the Mate, so i guess it's not the case. Thanks for any suggestion.

As partition labels are not used on most partitions, would you mind to indicate, which partitions are used for what:
It appears that /dev/sda3 is used for rootMX18
/dev/sdb1 for mate's root or is it /dev/sda1 ?

Have you actually tried to boot into Mate after re-sizing partitions and before insatlling MX Linux?
Re-sizing partitions is always a bit "risky", so all those steps shall be done very carefully
to avoid any side effect.
The installer does not touch any partitions used by Mate, I guess this might have something to do with "freeing some space".
Do also check permission and ownership with Mate's home, as we have seen it a lot, that user pollute their home folder with wrong ownership.

Thanks for the super fast responses. You guys rock!
The issue was that i shrinked the drive Mate is on a bit to small for it to load the desktop.
I noticed that there was no space trying to install a xfce desktop.
With MX i deleted some big movies from the drive and now Mate boots and i can log in as if nothing had ever happened :-)

Cool, yes we always tend to forget our "limits" in space and time :alien:
