However it is always convenient to have a separate data partition segregated from the MX file system whether home or root.
I don't store personal data in the home directory.
Regarding the .config folder, surely I can copy the folder for apps I installed myself in Mint to the .config folder in MX?

If I were you, I would back up the Mint Home folder somewhere so you can proceed cautiously. I say that because Mint is based on Testing while MX uses Stable, so I wonder what version changes might cause trouble.

Perhaps this is of some use to posterity. My experience with re-using the /home directory:
  • re-using it on the same machine for the same distro and same DE - no problem
  • re-using it on another machine for the same distro and same DE - not very good
  • re-using it on another machine for the same distro and different DE - no good
I had LM 19.1 XFCE on my old machine, and when I bought a new one I installed LM 19.1 XFCE on it too, but ended up reinstalling everything from scratch because re-suing the old LM 19.1 XFCE /home directory still made a mess. The only thing that was reusable was my personal files like spreadsheets, PDFs, etc.
