New install fails to boot... [solved]

#1

Post by semper » Sat Feb 09, 2019 12:45 pm

I'm having some trouble with a new install of MX-18. I've made three attempts now and each time I go to re-boot after the installer finishes, I get past Grub then arrive at this screen..

Code: Select all

....] Starting NetBIOS name server:mnbd[2019/02/09 15:46:42.871963, 01 ../lib/util/debug.c:951(reopen_logs_internal)
Unable to open new log file 'var/log/samba/log.' : Read-only file system
 failed!
[ ok ] Starting vitual private network daemon:.
[FAIL] Starting SMB/CIFS daemon: smbd failed!
/etc/init.d/bootlogd: 71: /etc/init.d/bootlogd: cannot create /var/log/boot: Read-only file system
[FAIL] startpar: service(s) returned failure: nmbd smbd plymouth ... failed!

Welcome to MX Linux! Powered by Debian.
mx login: _

After logging in at the prompt I get this message..

Code: Select all

[ 1596.752120] systemd-logind[2922]: Failed to start user service, ignoring: Unknown unit: user@1000.service
Clearly something is awry, but I'm not sure how to proceed.
Initially I thought it might be down to my not having un-ticked the samba option, so on my second attempt i made sure to do so (don't need samba anyway).
Third time I updated the installer (already latest version), and ran system updates prior to installing and ticked the save changes box in the installer.

Any assistance gratefully received...

Have you checked the md5sum of the downloaded file, did you check the md5sum of the liveusb?

Mind you to describe how you have chosen to install on to the drive, e.g root, boot, esp, swap etc, BIOS or UEFI booting,
It would also help to provide the output of the following command from the LiveUSB booted system,
which includes all partitions found on the system, so we might get a better picture of you installation:

Code: Select all

inxi -Flporxz

Ok, I'm looking at checking the usb stick using GTK hash, but I'm unsure which file to check.

Is there a better way to check the usb stick?

Computer is i5 with 8GB ram, Intel graphics and multiboot with three other linux OS's - Mint 17, Mint 18 and Kubuntu 18.04.
The MX install is to a single 30GB partition - home in root. Swap is 4GB

I'll Fetch the inxi info shortly.

As you already verified the checksum of the ISO, it might be sufficient to choose md5sum verification from the LiveUSB boot menu.

Ok, this is your MX-18 partion with all /root and home with one partition.
Now, how do you boot into this, have you choosen to install grub to the MBR or to the PBR (i.e. to root) .
If into the PBR (partion boot sectore ) of /dev/sda10, you probaly need to
boot the mints or kubuntu grub-boot menu, after having refreshed (update-grub) those menu.
In any case post the grub-menuentry , of the MX-18 menu entry, which you'll find with the grub.cfg file of the controling grub with /boot/grub folder of that OS's or MX-18.
