Could not open \EFI\BOOT\fallback.efi": 14 [SOLVED]

#1

Post by Sparky » Wed Jan 23, 2019 6:03 am

I am trying to do a fresh install in one of my laptops. I tried a few distros to make sure it wasn't the laptop itself, and they work fine.
But whenever I try to boot from the MX USB I get that error. Anyone knows what it means or how to solve it?

First things first:

did you check the md5sum of the download?
did you check the md5sum of the liveUSB?

I suggest you download from one of the mirrors closest to you and make sure you check the checksums and signature afterwards. https://mxlinux.org/wiki/system/iso-download-mirrors
I am command line illiterate.

That is not what I asked ;)

Did you check the md5sum yourself (after the download).

Check it by comparing the provided md5sum file content with the calculate md5sum (IIRC) when you right click on the iso file.

You could try burning the iso to the usb again using Live USB Maker if you have a working MX install.
You could open gparted and wipe the usb clean first. I usually do it by creating a new partition table. Next I make a new partition and format it as FAT32.

Yes, I see a couple of reason why such thing can happen.
But you would provide a bit of information to understand the situation.
What is the system spec (e.g. inxi -Fxz) you try to boot from that iso.
Is that an 32bit or an 64bit system?
What is the exact name of the iso file you downloaded?
And finally how was the usb-stick prepared with that iso file.
Backround: You have three diffrent type of creating a LiveUSB:
- ISO-mode ( akak dd-dump mode : Etcher, dd-command or MXLive USB dd-mode)
- FAT32 mode (Rufus, UNetbootin ..)
- MX Live USB full-featured
In all three creating modes different start sequences are triggerd when booting.

I used ISO mode, using etcher. The machine is a 64 bit Apollo based laptop with 6GB RAM
The name is Jumper ezbook 3 Pro
The ISO file is named MX-18_x64.iso, but shows up as Antix when booting.
The weird thing is that Linux Mint and Ubntu's live USB worked fine, it's just in MX that I have this problem and I really want to use MX Linux on this laptop.
I do have a working MX Linux laptop, I will try using the Live USB maker.

MX live USB maker is asking for an ISO file. Should I point it to the one I have downloaded?
