PS: I cannot install using a USB thumb drive because my BIOS does not have that option.
If you make a live-usb with the same system that is on the live-dvd then you can select "F4 Options" --> "from=usb" when you boot the dvd.
That is a very important advice. :number1: We tend to forget it.
As @BitJam said: You can run MX-Linux from USB by using DVD/CD as a kind of boot-starter CD. After having booted from the DVD pressing F4 with from=usb and the remaining boot goes from the USB.
This works also if the BIOS's do not support to boot from USB.

Sorry for being such an ignorant, but what exactly do I need to put on the USB drive? Do I need to burn the .iso file on it? How do I do that? I've never done such a thing...

You could even do it from a booted MX DVD. Start MX Live USB Maker select the ISO from the Harddrive plugin you USB key
select the USB key as target to create a LiveUSB. Alternatively on WinOS tools like Rufus know to be very good to creat LiveUSB's from an ISO. Sure lot#s of other ways to do it....

On the boot of dvd on my older computer when booting the dvd I had to change the boot options -tab removed quiet-then added acpi=off failsafe. I then booted the iso and installed mxlinux 18-It worked fine for me with no problems after booting the system from the hard drive.thanks john

* The "from=usb" method suggested by BitJam did not work. (I used the MX Live USB Maker to "burn" the .iso file to a USB stick)

* The "acpi=off failsafe" method suggested by golden45 did not work.

* The first time that I click on the Installer icon, nothing happens. If I click on the icon again, I get the following message on a popup window:
The installer won't launch because it appears to be running already in the background.
Please close it if possible, or run 'pkill minstall' in terminal.
I tried the "pkill minstall" method suggested without success...

* I found a DVD with MX Linux 17 on it and proceeded to install it. Everything went smoothly. So there must be something in the install DVD for MX Linux 18 that is not compatible with my PC!
