Cheap Dell Laptop MX Linux 18

#1

Post by jinda » Fri Dec 21, 2018 12:36 am

Dear Everyone
Booted MX Linux 18 from a usb flash drive. Boots then locks up at about the welcome screen. Got into the terminal ran sudo service lightdm restart. Then it works and responds on till I try to login to my wifi. Tried again locks up in the installer doesn't get passed the second screen. So it works better after sudo service lightdm restart but will lockup.
Works with MX Linux 17.1 the only difference I can find it the kernel version. This is the worlds cheapest laptop but still fun and hopefully I learn something. Dell inspiron 11.6 4gb - amd a6. THANKS

I think Eadwine Rose had a similar problem with her system locking up at the lightdm login screen after an install. I don't know how that was resolved.

For kicks you could trying using a boot parameter to change the graphics driver. For example:

Code: Select all

nomodeset xorg=vesa
or the more ambitious:

Code: Select all

xorg=modesetting
Locking when lightdm starts makes me suspect the graphics driver. If we find a solution then we may even be able to automatically detect problematic systems and apply the solution during the live boot.
Will I cry when it's all over?
When I die will I see Heaven?

In Facebook, I just saw that a user there appeared to have the same issue. However, that user is known to mix and match DEs, repos and PPAs, and he said he solved it by using gdm, which likely means he also had Gnome desktop on his system. So I'm not sure his situation is exactly the same.
Desktop: Intel i5-4460, 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics
Clevo N130WU-based Ultrabook: Intel i7-8550U (Kaby Lake R), 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics (UEFI)
ASUS X42D laptop: AMD Phenom II, 6GB RAM, Mobility Radeon HD 5400

Before the nvidia install all went well.. it started locking up after installing that. Got one or two good boots and that was it.

Once I removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf I was magically thrown to my desktop again once I entered startx.

First Thank You Everyone

Tried nomodeset xorg=vesa got an error.
Tried xorg=modesetting didn't help
Got an idea I downloaded AntiX Linux and tried there settings not all but some.
Got some errors but still nothing. Runs for a short time then the touchpad is not responding.
Mouse is moving. Then programs are not closing there "window bar", then locked up.
Got a my wireless mouse and keyboard from my RPI, now I am thinking.
I got it! No still locked up.

Thanks

Thank you

Everyone

I got it I didn't add xorg=modesetting to the correct spot in the grub.
That's why it didn't work. Must be at the end of the line starting with: linux /antiX//vmlinuz
