Live USB stick boots to blinking cursor or black screen

#1 Post by paul1149 » Fri Jun 01, 2018 2:37 am

I'm trying to install MX 17.1 x64 as a dual boot onto an HP Elite x2. I've turned off Secure Boot and left UEFI mode on. I used MX's Live-usb Maker to set up a USB stick.

When I try to boot normally, I get a black screen. If I choose Failsafe I get a blinking cursor.

Is there anything that can be done to get this thing to boot to a live session? Thanks.

Have you checked the md5sum of the downloaded file?

Have you checked the same with the USB when you are on the grub screen? F4 I THINK that it was.

Thanks for the idea. The hash on the iso checks out. I don't know how to do the hash from the grub menu, but I reburned the stick, same results. Then I chose grub's 1024x764 video boot option, which led to a non-blinking cursor.

I burned MX to a different stick, to double-check. It led to a fatal error, `Could not find antiX/linuxfs`. Weird. Maybe I'll try a third stick.

I've also done a wider Web search on the problem, and am getting nowhere.

In the bottom of the screen with the options that also states what you want to boot, where you can either wait or press enter to boot, there are a number of F keys listed you can try. check md5sum is in one of these.. I believe F4, but you'd have to check.

The checksum option I don't see on the main menu anywhere, but I did find it under the ~Custom, Text interface~ option. All files passed successfully.

That second stick is new, and burned very slowly. I suspect it's defective.

Third stick - blinking cursor. 1024 video option: non-blinking cursor.

Stuck.

My goodness. After the checksum test I left the thing at a blank screen as I continued looking on the Web for answers. Just as I was going to shut it down it booted to the desktop - a good 10 minutes later! I just want to make sure I'm running off the stick, and it didn't do something weird to the hard drive. Will get back.

I finally got MX installed and the machine to boot. I thought the problems would be over, but the 10+ minute boot delay continues even when booting from the hard drive. There has to be some hardware incompatibility? When this happened from the USB stick there was no indication from the stick's light that there was any activity going on.

:fishing:
A recent topic mentioning a laptop boot delay problem http://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?f=107&t=45356
was resolved by adding the tiny (48kb?) "havegd" package
sudo apt-get install haveged
