@skidoo - Thanks much. That looks brilliant. I checked and the first two progs are installed, the third one is not is synaptics. Then I discovered I can't get the wifi to work. I may have to abort this install.

Please look at post #6 above.
Thanks for the reminder. That post came when I couldn't get into the machine, and I forgot about it. Sorry @Jerry.

What does

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep iwlwifi
look like? Anything about giving up when it goes through the list of possible firmware files and can't find one? If not, then it may be a hard or soft radio switch issue. This Ubuntu guide works well on MX: https://askubuntu.com/questions/235279/ ... oubleshoot

@Stevo - no, there were just four quick lines of output, everything seems fine. Thanks for that page, will hold onto it.

@skidoo - the install had the first two of of those files, and I brought `rng-tools.deb` over by usb stick, but it didn't solve anything.

I also tested the machine with ubuntu 18.05, and there was no boot delay and the wifi card worked perfectly. There is no way I would install that distro, however. I also tested manjaro, no problem.

Then I thought to burn the usb stick using dd rather than unetbootin. Same boot delay, but now the wifi worked fine. I was hoping for a double-play, but no. I'm reluctantly going to abort this particular MX install. Too many obstacles and I've spent an inordinate amount of time on it already. Will use a diff distro this time around.

Thanks to everyone for the help, and be blessed.

The denouement - manjaro was quite similar to MX, and ran well on the machine, but I was unprepared to deal with non-deb package management, and certainly the friend the machine is for would not be either. So I settled for Mint. It's running well, no major problems, but it's definitely not as well thought out and implemented as MX.

I burned MX to a different stick, to double-check. It led to a fatal error, `Could not find antiX/linuxfs`. Weird. Maybe I'll try a third stick.

I've also done a wider Web search on the problem, and am getting nowhere.
That's exactly what happened to me on a perfectly fine usb stick earlier this week. I'm pretty sure that it was a mistake that I made during the boot stick creation, because when I used the same stick again while changing a couple of options during that process, the next install went without a hitch. I wasn't using dd, but I was trying to create my own custom boot stick. Your hardware looks like it should be perfectly fine, I wouldn't give up yet ...

I thought dd would be a pain, but it's quite straightforward. And it's much faster than anything else I've used, and the results are spectacular. I have a couple of utilities that do multi-boot usb sticks, but there always are problems, some fatal. But with dd I got no problems, i got full graphic menus, etc.

I still have the machine, maybe I'll give it another live usb try.
