Dual boot with win 10 and Mx linux 17.1 - Unable to boot

#1 Post by MAGGIE » Wed May 30, 2018 2:38 pm

HI,

I have been using Majaro with Win10 Dual boot. I am fed up with updating almost thrice a week.
I have searched in internet and came to know about MX linux. The reviews are very good.

So i have downloaded the live ISO and Checked the live environment. I was impressed with it. So i tried to install it . Mine is Legacy bios system. So i seleted MBR for bootloader and grub configuration shows both win10 and Mx linux. The installation was brisk and successful. However when i restart i am not getting the Grub menu at all. i was left with a Black screen with a blinking cursor. When i hit any key, error shown as no bootable device.

My system info taken from Manjaro installation as follows.

I am also curious about what you are saying about having both legacy boot and Windows 10. Are you able to boot Win10 with the legacy boot enabled? Or is that machine doesn't support UEFI at all?

Have you made sure to make a system update before installing, as we had recently some updates with the installer.
Better download the latest Snapshot mx171_May iso, in order the system update would not take long.

I actually had a similar problem....but in reverse, when I tried out Manjaro a few months ago. It booted up fine on the live CD, but hung up when trying to startup after the installation.

I followed the advise to boot up with the live cd and used gparted under the tab "manage flags" to make sure sda1 had the "boot" box checked. It wasn't. So after setting sda1 as the boot.......problem solved.

Might be worth checking out.

Since unable to boot i boot up live iso and repaired grub config file where it correctly found win10 and MX

I thought Win10 needs to boot in UEFI?
Desktop: Intel i5-4460, 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics
Clevo N130WU-based Ultrabook: Intel i7-8550U (Kaby Lake R), 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics (UEFI)
ASUS X42D laptop: AMD Phenom II, 6GB RAM, Mobility Radeon HD 5400

Thanks djmclaws! That bootflag-trick has to be fixed within the "MX Installer"!
