MX 17.1 install fails at partitioning (probably due to NVME & UEFI)

#1 Post by jacklarge » Sun Apr 15, 2018 4:21 am

Hi MX Gurus,

I like the look of MX Linux but having 'issues' getting out of the starting gate! I know the Live CD works with my Laptops specs very nicely but the Installer appears to have a bug at stage 1a/b (partitioning/formatting the disk). I've seen a couple of XPS queries in the forum but none seemed to be exactly the same as mine (or really helped).

My inxi -F:

When I run (after updating everything via Synaptic) the installer I get:

then:

and finally:

When I run it via the terminal it appears that the installer is expecting the NVME disk to be nvme0n1p11 rather than nvme0n1p1?

Hope someone can help me as I would really like to install this Distro on my laptop (and it has trashed the partitions so I need to install something :p )

Cheers!

instead of 'nvme0n11', try 'nvme0n1p1'.

Thanks for the quick reply stsoh. How would I go about that?

i thought u r using terminal to format/partition/mount nvme0n1, if u r not sure then use gpart.

If I partition using gdisk at the terminal, all seems fine. But then when I use the Installer it doesn't give me the option to use those partitions it just allows 'auto install using the entire disk'. So I get exactly the same problem repeating (plus I lose all my partitions that I made in gdisk).

Try using gparted before the installer, formatting the entire hdd to ext4.

I'd second what Jerry3904 says. This sounds like a very similar problem that I had. See here ...viewtopic.php?f=92&t=43904

Jerry - did as suggested - same result as previous, unfortunately. I think it is more to do with a problem with the installer than anything else at this point.

Wulf - have done all that too - the installer doesn't seem to take any notice of the existing partitions. By the way (probably nothing to do with this issue but) Secure Boot is off in the BIOS too.

Thanks for all the suggestions though guys.

One thing I haven't tried is to use Legacy rather than UEFI in the BIOS boot.

I plan on only having one OS on this laptop so I could try that - does anyone see any issue with going down that path?

Sorry, should have asked the first question first: have you looked at the Wiki entry (linked in the Users Manual) on this:

https://mxlinux.org/wiki/system/uefi#Li ... nvironment

There is also a video that might be of help:
