SOLVED -- Cannot get MX16, MX15, or AntiX to work

#1 Post by BillT » Mon Oct 23, 2017 7:26 pm

I have to apologize in advance - I'm a senior citizen, I'm not very computer savvy, and I'm not sure on how much detail to give you with my problem.

I started using Linux with MEPIS 7 and my last installation was with MEPIS 12. It was always a very reliable system and easy to install. In fact, the installer dialog boxes still appear to be the same with the latest versions of MX and AntiX. So I felt very comfortable with the installer.

MEPIS 12 has worked very well until lately. I kept updating the system with Synaptic, but newer versions of software have caused the system to go South. First it was with Firefox, but I was able to figure that out. Then Wine stopped working. So I thought it would be best just to install a newer system on another partition on my hard drive.

I downloaded the latest version of MX16 on October 9th and made a live DVD. Today I tried installing it, but the installer died after after the system was loaded. I never got to install the boot loader or put in any passwords. Tried it twice, but to no avail.

Then I tried the latest version of MX15 and everything seemed to go well. However, when I tried booting off the hard drive, MX15 would not accept my password. So I re-installed it and made sure the passwords were typed properly. Well, that didn't work.

I only have 2 GB of memory and the computer is about 8 years old, so I thought maybe the latest version of AntiX would be a better choice. But again, the passwords placed in the installer are not accepted.

In making the live CD, or DVD's, the checksums agreed. So it was assumed the downloads were good.

Where do I go from here and what information do you need to help me?

Maybe a

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
wont hurt to post to get things rolling here. 2 gig of ram is OK. 8 year old computer sounds OK. the inxi report will give more detail on what you have there.

Oh yeah

if possible

Code: Select all

sudo dmesg | tail
after things go south for you won't hurt to post either.

Example. My laptop

Code: Select all

harry@biker:~
$ sudo dmesg | tail

Maybe the HD is on its last legs. Firefox and Wine should not have gone south on a healthy M12 system with sane repositories.

Since the installers all seem to die when setting up the passwords, I wonder if you might be choosing some invalid/unallowed characters for the password(s) ? I think the installer's supposed to test for that but maybe something got thru.

Was yours a laptop? I've had problems with a few laptops/netbooks (acer, asus) booting up from MX live usb with the wrong alternative keyset toggled on (laptops don't have a number pad so some letter keys might take that role with Fn key toggling the numerals keys).

It's the section of keyboard near J, K, L.

I usually tick the "show password" box for password completion (most common task when you boot up is entering wifi password) during live boot so that I can see my text output. If the wrong keyset is showing, toggle on and off and test a few times until the right set appears. After install you might have to do this again at first boot up but after that it'll remember the setting.

Thanks for the replies! I've also solved my problem. Turns out the partition I wanted to use for /home must be bad. Once a different partition was used for /home, everything went off without a hitch! Now I've got to set up MX16 to my liking, re-organize some data, and maybe start thinking about upgrading my system.
