MSi Wind NetBook and MX-16 boot error

#1

Post by Dillinger63 » Mon Feb 27, 2017 12:51 am

I'm trying to install the 32bit version of MX-16 into a MSi Wind 123. This older netbook has been running the 32 bit version of Ubuntu MATE with no issues. I created a live USB with MX-16 and when I got boot up from the USB I get the following error message.

That would probably be unetbootin made on a system without the latest syslinux install.

The user can type "live" at the prompt to proceed.

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

I used unetbootin to extract the .iso to a 4 gig USB.

Typing "live" did it, thanks so much. Is that pretty much the norm for all installs that may not work, typing the word "live?"

No but it works in our case. The real underlying issue is that from syslinux 4 to syslinux 6 the syslinux devs abandoned backward compatibility. It's getting to be less of an issue as time goes on but sticks.made from Windows or some linux/Ubuntu versions (esp. LTS versions) sometimes use an older syslinux and that leads to the problem.

The prompt is syslinux asking what to do next. If all you want to do is install then you are good. If you want some of the cooler live-usb features like persistence them you are better off making amother live-usb with the tool included in mx tools. Live-usb-maker. You can even use the stick you just made to do the job as long as you have a second stick, the tool will clone the running sysyem onto it...and our system has the proper version of syslinux already.

Thanks for the info as I'm a nOOb to anything Linux. Is there and easy way to install programs such as Cherry Tree (writing App) and such? With Ubuntu MATE there was an included program that allowed me to search for them, but I can't seem to find anything with MX-16. Or you can point me to another link where this question was asked that would be fine too.

synaptic is the app to use in our case.

Jerry raises a good point. the manual is very good and its pretty new-user friendly. there is a version online on our website and in the "help" in the system menu.
