Before getting into GRUB I get
"error: unknown filessystem"
"error: you have to load the kernel first."

"Press any key to continue . . ."

pressing any key takes me into GRUB - I then get the standard options that work OK when I run on the desktop
"MX-18.3 x64 (May 26, 2019)"
"MX-18.3 x64 Customize boot . . . . . ."
">>>> advanced options. . . . . . .. "
I think you can fix it this way manually:
After this message "Press any key to continue . . ." and pressing any key
you get a Grub menu:
Now do press "c" for command line and type

Code: Select all

echo $root
echo $prefix
Example, where I can reproduce the issue and show the manual "workaround"/fix

Code: Select all

echo $root
(hd0)
echo $prefix
(hd1,msdos2)/boot/grub

Now the fix is, to set "root" so it fits to "prefix"
Type this and hit Enter

Code: Select all

set root=(hd1)
After you have done this press "Esc"-key and you shall see a working Grub-menu.
