memory usage by desktop environment

#1 Post by jdmeaux1952 »

I was doing some searching and ran across this chart of memory usage by desktop environments. I found it interesting.

The KDE/xfce ratio agrees pretty much with findings by others on this forum. This metric is not very meaningful, however. Increased memory use doesn't translate proportionally to a decrease in performance. I've never been concerned about "conserving" memory. As long as you have enough memory, you won't notice much of a difference.
MX-14; 3.12-0.bpo.1-686-pae kernel using 4GB RAM
2.4GHz AMD Athlon 4600+
NVidia GeForce 6150 LE; 304.121 Display Driver
You didn't slow down because you're old; you're old because you slowed down.

I've got 16 Gb on my desktop AMD machine, 4 Gb on my MSI laptop, and 512 Mg on myJUNKBOX. I have used Openbox, Fluxbox, and LXDE on the JUNKBOX. Although I never have truly worried about the memory usage, I just though that what was posted as memory usage for the different desktop environments was interesting.

I think DE [choice] depends on how much bling one wants,
how much memory is available,
and probably sun spots. :p

Don't forget what you ate last night. This can effect many things. ;)
Yes, even I am dishonest. Not in many ways, but in some. Forty-one, I think it is.

It is interesting. Thanks for posting. In particular, I'm surprised that MATE is so much lower than Xfce. I expected them to be more or less the same. Whoever did this must've isolated just the DE portion of memory use. This is important info for low RAM systems, but I do agree that with modern 4-8GB machines with fast processors, it's more a curiosity than anything else.

Perhaps you forgot the most important thing - the phases of the moon.

I had been "googling" something like "desktop environment memory" or "comparison of DE" or "lxde VS xfce" when I ran across an article on memory usage by DE. I should have linked back to the article as well. :bagoverhead:

Must have been from this site: http://lxlinux.com/
I got very different results when comparing kde and xfce on mx-14.
Kde with akonadi turned off isn't heavy at all. OK, it's using more memory than xfce, but much less than indicated by this chart.
Could it be a little bit rigged to show how light lxde is?
