MX-14 support length?

#1 Post by newkansan »

Is there an official support length for MX-14? I typically stick with LTS-based distros because of the set (3-5 year) support lengths. How does MX-14 work with regards to this? I see that it is based off of Debian Stable with "ongoing backports to the Community Repos." What does this mean if I install 14.2 today? How long will that install be supported? Just something I'd like to have a good handle of before committing to my main laptop (which I generally don't like to reinstall for at least 2 years).

Thank you.

Debian stable is usually supported for around 3 years, 2 years as stable, and then another year as "old stable". That said, debian recently enacted long term support for the last version (debian 6 squeeze) until 2016. being that squeeze was released in 2011, that's around 5 years from debian upstream. there is every expectation that the same will happen with the current debian stable (debian 7 wheezy).

Even if Long term support isn't enacted for wheezy, you will get around two years of support from today, as the next stable release isn't expected until May 2015 or so (debian releases "when its done", so exact dates are not possible at this time).

that covers the debian side of things. as far as community repo support, that answer will need to come from someone else. But a quick glance in the forums tells me that to some extent at least, packages are maintained for Mepis 8.5, mepis 11, and the never-yet-released mepis 12.

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.
