I hope this finds you well.

I'd very much like to purchase an MX-14 disc for my older Dell and Fujitsu machines, both of which are currently running antiX12, however I am unsure whether to buy a PAE or non-PAE version.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

A thousand thanks, and please accept my

antiX12 should have inxi installed.

If you run inxi -Fx it will show a flags line in the CPU section, if it doesn't list a pae flag you'll need the non-PAE version.

btw adding the "x" is necessary, 'inxi -F' by itself doesn't show the flags

Great--I will add that to the web page for users already running Linux.

I didn't mention it earlier, I think the pae flag is only listed for 32bit CPUs.

My new 64bit machine doesn't show a pae flag, but I would need to use the PAE version of MX-14 if I had more than 4GB of RAM installed (I don't).

What would a Windows user do? I did a quick search and didn't find anything easy.

I haven't used it but this looks like it might show it: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

You are correct. 32-bit cpus show the pae codes, while most 64-bit do not. However, if you want to use 4Gb or more of memory
(which usually ends up being a virtual swap file), you will need the pae version. if your 64-bit machine only had 3 GB, you should use the non-pae version.

I will give that a test on my old laptop with XP and in my virtual W2K.

A PAE kernel is only 'needed' if you want to use more than 3.2(or3, or4, depends) of RAM. I've had 4 GB of RAM on my Desktop for a long time. A non-PAE kernel is supposed to be a little faster. I never noted it. But I'm easily satisfied. Desktop uses PAE on any 32-bit OS.
That said, I use the PAE version exclusively even on my 2 GB Netbook (single-core, hyper-threading enabled).
Yes, even I am dishonest. Not in many ways, but in some. Forty-one, I think it is.

It might not give the correct info on the virtual W2K install.

Why not just fire up a live session & look in /proc/cpuinfo. I checked it on my 64 bit system & the pae flag was shown.
