What you need to do is run hddtemp as suid root.

Here is how you do it:

Open the terminal, become root and type: dpkg-reconfigure hddtemp

You will get to see a new window where you can configure hddtemp.

Install hddtemp to run as root and to start at boot.

After you are done close the terminal and log out and in. If all worked out you should now see the harddrive(s) appear in the applet.

Hope this helps some other folks!
