Will do, but in what way is it more polished?

I find the interface and layout more attractive. The video window is contained in the application without opening another window. Plus your search list is saved and shows on the opening screen

I have smtube running in beta1 here. It wouldn't play at first, but then prompted for a Youtube config upgrade. When accepted it updated the config & it worked.

smtube running in pre-beta2 also works, but I had to click on preferences, set it to vlc 9even though it was already set to vlc), double click on video and My Generation blasts out!

smtube will also be able upgrade itself on the fly to keep up with the Youtube API changes, as Tim just showed. That's a killer feature, IMO. Also, newer versions of Minitube are restricting the downloads of videos to those with Creative Commons licenses, a killer anti-feature to me. The VLC backend to smtube can also record clips of videos just by hitting the record button, too.

I found out the easiest ways to upgrade vlc on beta 1 is

Code: Select all

aptitude dist-upgrade -t wheezy-backports
aptitude dist-upgrade -t mx
as root, of course.
