Renting used to be far more expensive than buying, with regular increases in rent cost. Rising property taxes have made buying much more of a pain. For years the cost of running local schools have depended on property taxes with regular increases, and there are other expenses. In a few weeks a dead 40 year old elm tree must be removed from my yard ($900). And my drain pipe to the street must be inspected, if it needs replacing $4,000 to $8,000.
But our house payment is still far less than rent. Yet I would not want to buy a house right now as the prices are insane.

New York taxes are notoriously high. But when you get to be a senior there is a program that reduces them at a certain income level which is not that high. My property taxes are half what they were.

I am very thankful that our country has subsidies in place for those who cannot pay regular rent fees. More than half of my rent is covered by this system. You cannot rent on the private market with this, but I don't need to.. I have a three story house, front yard, back yard, and a shed. What more could I want

After a complicated story that one of the MX staff said sounded like the story in a country & western song. lol

I eventually bought a permanent site with a caravan & a substantial annex (sandwitched polystyrene job) with a bathroom & laundry. With a beautiful river being <20 meters from my front door, for $60K.

The place is incredibly peaceful & beautiful (I've been camped here through both xmas & easter before I bought in). The permanent inhabitants that I've met are generally the grateful/respectful/humorous kind. So I'm happy with all of that.

It costs me $120-/week + the electricity I use for the rent of the land that my home is situated on. That includes them doing all of the gardening, garbage removal, supplying the water that I use, sewerage, security gate out the front & other stuff too.

So all in all, I've become pretty happy trailor trash. :)

@Eadwine Rose, it is often VERY windy here. The view out over a lot of water (no wind break) on the windward side, really lets the strong winds that happen around here come roaring in.

My caravan is an old piece of junk, that could well do with having its guts ripped out, & being relined, re-floored & one way or another, re-roofed. The re-roofing would certainly make it a whole lot quieter in the big winds. 10K will make the thing unrecognisable (it would cost that much if I choose to continue to use it as a kitchen too, otherwise substantially less).

As our macro world deteriorates & precious metals become more valuable, I'll spend on the place & make it more comfortable (& quieter). ;)
