Big mistake, big, huge, started Windows

#1 Post by m_pav »

I've had a dormant Windows 10 installation in my production laptop which I start from time to time, primarily so I can scan scan multiple photos in 1 hit using my A3 Epson All-in-One via wireless because Linux software does not have this capability.

Boy did I get spanked for allowing Windows to use my network. It's now 2 hours later and this usually rocking fast machine whose fan I never hear is still trying to update the stupid Windows system, all the while with the fan cutting in and out as it heats up and cools down.

I am reminded again why I left the IT sector where 90% of Windows users have been brain washed to consider this a normal and acceptable behavior - YUK !

Have to say I agree. Having reluctantly moved from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 10 pro, and despite knowing nearly every trick in the book to stop it phoning home when it pleased, I did the best thing I have ever done and installed MX17. The first thing I noticed was a 3X increase in the speed of my connection. It was,(is), a sharp learning curve for me having no previous experience of Linux, apart from briefly playing about with some distro years ago, which left me feeling right out of my comfort zone at the time. I've been running MX for just over a month now and it's brilliant!...So a big thank you to all the guys and girls? who put their time and effort into making and maintaining this distro, and to the friendly forum members who have been good enough to respond to the odd questions I've had along the way..

For me it's puzzling how Microsoft and some users consider that it's OK for an update to take longer than it would take to install a fully-featured operating system. Not only a Microsoft problem, there are many pieces of software that take hours or in any case considerably more time to install (or even remove) that it takes to boot and install MX. Heck, even the "Getting things ready, don't turn off your PC" or "just a moment" screen that shows up after you install Windows 10 takes a good number of minutes sometimes, I could be booted into MX and do something productive by that time...

Mac is not far from Windows, I upgraded High Sierra on one of the machine it took 45 minutes or so, I could have installed Linux 4 times on that machine. This site give 57 minutes for Mountain Lion on some machines http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-ho ... ion-2012-7 -- 57 minutes!!! Even on SSDs it takes 20 minutes, but come on not everybody has SSDs. Which by the way brings me to a second point, Windows on a machine that would be been considered a supercomputer 10 years ago (i7, 8GB RAM) barely runs from HDD, actually I would claim is not really usable if you don't have a SSD.

MIke,
Thank you for a good laugh. The subject brings memories of some of your sessions at BoPlug.

MY solution?
I have Win7SP1 home premium on one i5-3317u notebook, and Win7SP1 professional on one i3-3227u x131e thinkpad. Have had windows update turned OFF since fall of 2016 (when I started getting daily "update to Win10 or else" nagware downloads from Micro$hit), and the paid version of Avast during the same time period. Haven't had any problems. Dual booted with MX.

I have a removable drive with windows 7 pro on it. Adobe CC just really needs windows, can't help that now.

First thing I did was turn the updates off. I do that manually when -I- think it is ok to do so. Did put security essentials on it, and the other needed software has been kept to a minimum, not even chrome is on there. I don't do anything but work related stuff on it, that keeps it clean.

But it's a beast even with things kept to a minimum. MX is a LOT faster to work with, and Windows doesn't see all my hardware stuff properly. But then I don't need a tv card in windows, and I haven't even dared to try and connect my usb wireless dongle thingie, afraid I'd mess stuff up

But yeah.. for Adobe InDesign and PhotoShop I need it. And nope.. the Gimp is BY FAR not capable of doing what PS does.. unfortunately.

Well... i'm still own a CD containing a wonderful copy of extraordinary Win XP LSD III.V with a full version of Photoshop 6.0 and a gigafantasmic load of drivers, if anyone is interested by a stable MS system.

(if i search deeper, i could even find the Longhorn lookalike version of Mad Dog Win XP Pro SP3 pre-Titanium Unattend with CS
3 - without Bridge - AND Everest Ultimate, eh)

Good morning, have a nice week-end !

I recently cleaned out a lot.. had PhotoShop 4 still here, AND.. kept those.. 3.5" floppy disks to install Win 95  I remember that still.. having to insert one disk after the other.. oh maaan... hahaha

I couldn't even try to see if they still work, there is no floppy drive in this computer.

Nice responses y'all. It's now 7.5 hours later and Windows has successfully installed 17 updates with 3 still to be installed. I am driving this thing to see what it takes to get it updated, didn't quite expect this much time though, like nearly a full working day so far. Lucky I have my trusty little E330. Who codes this type of stuff anyway? I think they need to go back to programming 101 and learn how to code properly. HELLO WORLD !

If I'm not mistaken, by the time this exercise has finished, I'll have nearly doubled the total usage time of the installed Windows system on this laptop and really achieved next to nothing with it other than scanning photos for my family. Mate, I'm impressed with the statistics, usage vs maintenance ratio, 60:40 compared to my trusty MX installations since its inception, 99.95:.05 on mine and 99.999:.001 on my families machines.

Once a year I boot my W7 load and update it in anticipation of doing my taxes. WSUS is the only way I've been able to get that accomplished successfully in the last few years.
