I think it's a Rubik's Cube contest.
Yes, even I am dishonest. Not in many ways, but in some. Forty-one, I think it is.

Here is the result of my upgrading the one package (which took a few others along):

upon booting with HP 840c deskjet and HP F2280 AIO:

Jun 2 19:27:02 mepiseadwine hp-systray: hp-systray[3649]: error: option -s not
recognized

this is normal for my system, had it in 12a1 and 12a2 and 11 I think as well

upon starting skanlite and hitting preview:

Jun 2 19:27:48 mepiseadwine skanlite: io/hpmud/pp.c 627: unable to read
device-id ret=-1
Jun 2 19:28:14 mepiseadwine kernel: [ 361.664281] usblp0: removed
Jun 2 19:28:14 mepiseadwine kernel: [ 361.665779] Did not find alt setting 1
for intf 0, config 1
Jun 2 19:28:14 mepiseadwine kernel: [ 361.669735] Did not find alt setting 1
for intf 0, config 1
Jun 2 19:28:28 mepiseadwine skanlite: io/hpmud/mlc.c 238: unable to read
MlcReverseReply header: No data available bytesRead=0
Jun 2 19:28:28 mepiseadwine skanlite: io/hpmud/mlc.c 347: invalid MLCInitReply
retrying command...

it previews just fine, scanning works

Then starting a print in libreoffice with the HP F2280 AIO:

Jun 2 19:33:10 mepiseadwine hpcups[5379]: prnt/hpcups/Lidil.cpp 586:
CupeInteger1 = [1]
Jun 2 19:33:10 mepiseadwine hpcups[5379]: prnt/hpcups/Lidil.cpp 587:
CupeInteger2 = [0]
Jun 2 19:33:10 mepiseadwine hpcups[5379]: prnt/hpcups/Lidil.cpp 588: PrintMode
Index = [4]
Jun 2 19:33:10 mepiseadwine hpcups[5379]: prnt/hpcups/Lidil.cpp 600: Print Mode
= [PlainNormalColor]
Jun 2 19:33:10 mepiseadwine kernel: [ 656.948691] Did not find alt setting 1
for intf 0, config 1
Jun 2 19:33:11 mepiseadwine kernel: [ 658.205920] Did not find alt setting 1
for intf 0, config 1
Jun 2 19:33:13 mepiseadwine kernel: [ 660.203835] Did not find alt setting 1
for intf 0, config 1
Jun 2 19:33:15 mepiseadwine kernel: [ 662.200773] Did not find alt setting 1
for intf 0, config 1
Jun 2 19:33:17 mepiseadwine kernel: [ 664.197784] Did not find alt setting 1
for intf 0, config 1
Jun 2 19:33:19 mepiseadwine kernel: [ 666.194747] Did not find alt setting 1
for intf 0, config 1
Jun 2 19:33:21 mepiseadwine kernel: [ 668.191732] Did not find alt setting 1
for intf 0, config 1

this is all it spits out now, printing works

With the 840c:

Jun 2 19:35:11 mepiseadwine kernel: [ 777.770745] usblp1: removed

Printing works
MX-17.1_x64 Horizon 14-3-2018 * 4.15.0-1-amd64 ext4 Xfce 4.12.3 * AMD Asus M4A785TD-V EVO AM3 * ASUS GF GT640-1GD5-L NVIDIA 384.130 * AMD Proc. Athl II X4 635, sAM3 * HDA ATI SB VT1708S An * 2x4Gb DDR3 1600 Kingst * 22" Samsung SyncM P2250 * HP F2280
