MEPIS 12 Community Repo - the hplip thread

#1 Post by timkb4cq » Sun May 26, 2013 8:59 pm

Hplip 3.13.5 is now available in the Testing MEPIS 12 Community Repo.

Because Wheezy froze hplip fairly early, there are more than 50 new printer models which are supported in 3.13.5 but not in the 3.12.6 version that comes installed in MEPIS 12. Users whose printers are already well-supported don't need this upgrade, although it shouldn't hurt. It's an easy one to roll back in any event.
You'll need to change Synaptic's Settings -> Preferences -> Distribution to prefer versions from mepis in order to install this upgrade.

As with any package in Testing, feedback is welcome.

Tim,

Upgraded hplip. I have an older wireless all-in-one, HP PhotoSmart C4780 inkjet. Upgraded fine but I had to reinstall printer under HPLIP, CUPS and System Settings. Had to also reinstall my HP PhotoSmart 335. Both found and installed without any difficulty. Thanks for the upgrade.

I've put up a new version - 3.13.5mcr120+2

I was getting udev hanging at boot time from hp's udev rule until udev timed it out.
I adjusted the rule by using nohup to detach the offending program from udev to let it finish while hp's program keeps running.

I think this only happens when you have shared printers on other computers on your local network. If you have seen this delay then this should fix it. If you haven't, no need to update.

No problems with that. I have another thing that goes on, that when I google on it people say the printer doesn't work. Mine works and prints and even scans, so.. no big deal. But still, here:

The notice comes up in syslog when I start printing:

That is with one printer (840c) but the one in the siggie spits out something similar.
They both print, and the scanner works as well though.

If this needs to be moved to its own thread, please move it. Bedtime for me now ;)

I wasn't finding anything useful on that one, so I took a diff of HPCupsFilter.cpp in 3.13.4 & 3.13.5
Lo, and behold, in 3.13.5 they added the lines that produce that message. The test for blank file-pointers was done before, but when it found one it just returned to the calling procedure without an error. Now it floods the syslog with 'em.

Looks to me like someone added the lines to debug a problem and then didn't remove them for the release. The only real changes (there were some non-functional formatting changes) in that file were those logging lines and another line actually commented as // Save Raster file for Debugging

I really should remove them & rebuild again as overwhelming the syslog with useless debugging messages to the point it ignores them due to rate-limiting is bad form...

OK, hplip_3.13.5mcr120+3 is now available in the testing MEPIS Community Repository

In addition to removing the syslog spamming, Patches from Arch & RedHat were applied as well.
Arch's fixed a typo in the code that loads plug-ins for those printers that need them, which prevented the loading from happening. RedHat's fixes some problems with the way temp files are created.

I think next time I'll wait for Debian to have their swings at it first. They can swat the bugs so I don't have to! :attention:

Thanks for your work, Tim. I suppose you could think of sending it up to Debian...?

Well, I'm not a debian maintainer (there are both ubuntu & debian maintainers for hplip) & debian just moved 3.13.4 to Jessie. I'll keep an eye on it & when 3.13.5 goes to experimental or sid, I'll pipe in if they've missed something - or borrow if they catch something I haven't.

p.s. I have reported the issues I found upstream to hplip.

Tim,

I installed the upgrades with no problems. They did wipe out ny Photosmart 335 (socket://192.168.1.10/9100) and I had to reinstall it. This time it left my HP Photosmart C4780 installed under both installations (hp:/net/Photosmart_C4700_series?zc=C4700) & (dnssd://Photosmart%20C4700%20series%20%5B8C280F%5D._pdl-datastream._tcp.local/). HPLIP and CUPS both install the same printer differently and I gave fighting this a while back. Just let them exist and set one a default printer. Both settings will produce a test page.

Thanks for the updates.
