Solved Lightning Problem. :bongodrums:
(1) backed up my old tbird profile then purged Thunderbird and all extensions.
(2) deleted hidden .thunderbird and .icedove directories from home.
(3) Then reinstalled Thunderbird with nothing but British English locale.
(4) Rejoined my gmail IMAP and ISP's POP3 accounts.
(5)Then copied nothing but contents of my old POP3 mail folder from the backed up folder to /mail/ in the new profile in home/username/.thunderbird - overwiting contents when asked.
(6) Added Lightning extension through Add-on manager
(7) Used "CalDav" to connect to Google calendar.
(8) Note I did not use "Google provider" add on but followed the Google and TBird FAQ guides on using CalDav.

It all works so the problem was most probably my poor abused ancient profile which has gone through more changes than a chameleon on a tapestry. It was also stored on an NTFS partition from the days when I dual booted into "you-know-what" more and accessed it from TBird running under W*ws.

Thanks for the update. By the way, the test repo now has TB 13.0.1, which is supposed to fix a Flash bug. It was more of an issue in Firefox 13.0, of course.

Bump: the packaged Thunderbird 17.0.6 ESR Mozilla binaries are now in the testing community repo. They will appear as thunderbird-i686 for 32-bit users, thunderbird-amd64 (if I knew how to script if-then, I could have just "thunderbird", maybe someone could look at the debian/rules file and add that?) Or it seems pretty simple...will have to look at that.

Anyway, these install into /opt, have different desktop and icon files, so should not interfere with other repository versions of Thunderbird or Icedove. Please let us know how they are working if you give them a spin. Thanks!

Update: the latest security fix, 17.0.8esr, is now in the testing CR. I reverted to just having the package named "thunderbird", so please let us know how it's working if you try it out.

Update: decided to bundle the newest 24.0 for M12 and M11. The program should offer to upgrade Lightning to the compatible 2.0 version if you let it search.
