Machine Translation - Dutch

#1 Post by Gordon Cooper »

Section 3 of the User Manual has been translated into Dutch as part of ongoing tests of Deepl. A copy of this has been uploaded into DropBox. I would appreciate any comments about the accuracy of this translation. Deepl has made a few changes in the format - for example centered subtitles, they can easily be fixed. Am more interested to know if the translation makes sense.

Thanks!

It makes sense, sentence forming and such is normal and quite good, but there are things like Thunar, which it changes to Dunar in one instance.

And somewhere else.. "select the driver", get translated to "select the chauffeur" or fat32 gets translated to overweight32 but still.. the translation is very reasonable and a lot better than google translate *thumbs up*

Thanks from me too. That is what I expected, a general text translator having problems with computer language. I did expect it to be better than Google, but what ever we do
any translations will need to be checked by somebody fluent with the language and also familiar with computer terms. The driver/chaffeur change made me laugh.

@ Eadwine Rose. Driver could be left as driver or how about stuurprogramma ? Specific computer words such as fat32 and Thunar are best left untranslated I think.

Yep, both driver and stuurprogramma are correct. Considering most Dutch, especially those who are interested in using something other than Windows, are well versed in the English language they will understand the English manual just peachy anyway.

You must be joking. The examples you mentioned are better translations than the ones Google Translate comes up with? This is done with Google Translate. Where else do you see these kinds of translations? These are not done by a translator who looks at the story, looks at a sentence and then starts translating.
I have just started the the live version in Dutch and I was shocked to see the translations. I am now back in the English version cause I had a wrong keyboard when choosing Dutch, so typing special characters is impossible.
I can't find the program I just saw but the subject was: windows getting focus, which was translated with: vensters scherpstellen. For all of you not being able to understand Dutch: scherpstellen can also be translated with getting focus but then in the sense of a camera lens which is focused on a subject. A typical Google Translate translation.

And that's exactly my main reason for not having a Dutch edition of which ever distro I am using: the translations stink. And that I do agree with you: Considering most Dutch, especially those who are interested in using something other than Windows, are well versed in the English language they will understand the English manual just peachy anyway.
No translations needed, especially not these ones.

Do you have 1 and 2 already? I ask b/c we have made those available in the past since they cover so much of the new user's first questions.

The Dutch can understand English just fine, yes. But still we'd like to offer translations when we can. Of course you can help on the translations if you could and improve things, considering you are Dutch. We do what we can with the resources we have, and to languages other than English those simply are slim.

I abandoned the machine translator Deepl because to make any real progress I needed access to their Pro version. This proved impossible as the Deepl organisation would
not accept payment for the Pro from New Zealand, limiting themselves to Europe.
