There's a GUI for youtube-dl !

#1 Post by Sparky »

I've been using the terminal for it as far as I remember it, but I accidentally found a GUI for it in the stable repo!
It also works like a charm!

How does it compare with the installed-by-default SMTube?
Production: 5.10, MX-23 Xfce, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 16 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Personal: Lenovo X1 Carbon with MX-23 Fluxbox and Windows 10
Other: Raspberry Pi 5 with MX-23 Xfce Raspberry Pi Respin

From my limited exposure to SMTube (and I did try it out quiet a few times), youtubedl wins by a big margin. Especially If you are downloading a video *not* from youtube :p

I have been using it for a long time without a problem. It also upgrades from the app.

That's exactly what confuses me in Linux. Why on Earth can one app self update, and others need manual updates? I don't mean the OS, I mean apps in general, like FireFox for example.
P.S. Did you change your avatar photo? Not sure who I'm chatting with now.

It does not self update. You have to initiate the update from within the GUI by clicking on the "gear" on the upper right and choosing "Update"

You mean I have changed that much in five years? Do not answer that. Same richb

Hello,

there is GUI for youtube-dl.

There is also similar application (GUI) - ClipGrab. Maybe even more useful than youtube-dl-GUI (for youtube videos).

But sometimes CLI youtube-dl works better than youtube-dl-GUI (from my experience).

And youtube-dl (CLI) is irreplaceable for downloading videos from services other than YouTube (and for viewing video with mpv).

The best thing in youtube-dl is its simplicity:
$ youtube-dl <link-to-the-site-with-wideo>

It can manage with so many different sites and services, but probably is not widely known.

This combination (youtube-dl and mpv) is especially important for low specs machines - there is no need to watch video in browser. It's more convenient and effective to watch it with mpv starting in CLI:
$ mpv <link-to-the-video>

eventually
$ mpv ytdl://<link-to-the-video>
