A Ridiculous Study: Life Is Too Short to RTFM

#1 Post by Redacted » Sun Sep 16, 2018 9:19 am

From Oxford Academic:
"Life Is Too Short to RTFM: How Users Relate to Documentation and Excess Features in Consumer Products"
https://academic.oup.com/iwc/article/28/1/27/2363584

Just one quote from the abstract:
Over-featuring and being forced to consult manuals also appears to cause negative emotional experiences.
sigh :frown:

It's why you try to make stuff discoverable as well as documented.
And as to "excess" features, it's well to remember what was discovered about Word & Excel:

"80% of people use only 20% of the functionality (or less), but it's a different 20% for all of them."

Remember the screams when Gnome tried to simplify? Removing features is not the answer.

That's why you use the lives of other people, asking them to give you the response that you could have found yourself by reading the manual.

Also, I should do a study about how life is too short to read studies, that people read the title and abstract at the most and jump to conclusions ;)

I do hope everyone realizes that I think the study is ridiculous.
That’s why I put the sigh
