Contents of /ect/issue

#1 Post by ChrisUK » Sat Mar 10, 2018 10:49 am

I was wondering why MX puts so much into /etc/issue - most other Distros use it for the release info; like I expected to see

Code: Select all

MX 17 (Horizon) 64-bit
or similar. Instead, cat /etc/issue gives me this

Code: Select all

Welcome to MX 17.RC1 (Horizon) 64-bit! Powered by Debian.

For command line install, login as root (password=root).
Enter the command cli-installer. Follow the instructions.
Only curious, it's not a problem. Oh, I upgraded from RC1 if that affects it.

I also wondered why this is still there. I, for now, just removed the last two lines and kept the first. Why don't we see what others has done and maybe get the developers to change it to something nice for future release

I think that should be only in Live environment and removed when installed... maybe we need to change the installer to fix that.

Adrian, yes but to what?
New comers to linux needs something good looking, while others would like a more informative piece.
My idea is a small ASCII MX logo on the left with ttyX, date, time, machine name, ect. aligned to the right... Or visa versa.
just some ideas from my side.

PS Sorry ChrisUK for hijacking your thread

This line in live-to-installed script makes the change.

Code: Select all

cp_file /usr/share/antiX/issue etc/issue
At build time, build-iso folder should have an issue and issue.net file in /Themes/MX/misc

Silly question, is there a way to add that /usr/share/antiX/issue file into a deb (or add it when a deb updates -- postproc) so we can have a fix in the next monthly snapshot? I know it's not a big deal, but why not fix it if possible... in general I like all the files to be managed by .debs this way you can remove/update them, any special reason we have the file in build process and not in a deb?

I think so. will look at it tonight or tomorrow. we have lots of options for things like this. mx-system is a prime candidate.
