Suspend, Hibernate, Shutdown, or Stay Running?

Here is where users who have been using MEPIS awhile and know the basics of linux and MEPIS can ask questions.

I'm using solar panels + battery so I shut down my computer whenever I don't use it. Saving energy ...
Good idea but I suppose you need to have large batteries. And I don't know how sensible are your cells either. The weather is so bad these days I'm not sure they would produce enough...

And to answer OP question, always shut down AND I use multi-socket with a switch for my desktop. You can save a lot of energy thanks to this.

I shutdown and even cut the power to the system. Once almost had a fire because a printer decided it was its end of life, it's a good thing I noticed. I don't want something like that to happen at night or when I am not at home for a longer period of time (read: more than an hour).
That's not good :(

On my non-production machines, mostly laptops, I just log out and close the lid. My production machine just runs and runs for weeks on end, but I do a restart at least once per month just to clean up cache & registry settings. I'm not much into playing video games, but I do tons and tons of graphic/photo work, sometimes daily and sometimes with over 50 images open within GIMP at the same time. Displays on the production machine are always powered off before going to sleep. I've never used hibernate, ever ...

Don't want to be a kill-joy. Professional quirk but what an energy waste!

Any laptop made in the past 10 years or less should only sip a little power on suspend, right?

yeah, its pretty low. usually just enough to keep ram alive and light up a few LEDs.

lenovo ThinkPad T530 - MX-18.3
lenovo s21e - antiX-19 beta 2 (live-USB)
FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

Let say your laptop spend 16Wh on suspend during the whole night (8hours - 2W). During a year it is about 6kWh. Multiply it by 100 millions of people (at a rough guess, just to have an idea) and you get 0,6 TWh, several % of a nuclear plant production each year. And I think that's quite an upbeat assessment.
So not so insignificant.

And just to remind you that when a PC is shut off, the energy used does not equal zero.

Suspend 2 RAM unless it's overnight, then it's hibernation. Restart every few days or sooner if testing something.

Personally I disassemble my laptop completely and ship the parts back to the factory each night and then in the morning have them shipped back at which time I rebuild the machine and reinstall the OS from scratch, compiling each and every package in the Debian and MX repositories by hand.

Ship them? You don't drive them there and back in a Tesla
