Suspend, Hibernate, Shutdown, or Stay Running?

#1

Post by KBD » Mon May 28, 2018 6:52 pm

Wondering how you handle your MX Linux computers when it comes to uptime, restarts, suspend, or hibernate?
My server on a desktop computer stays running weeks at a time, but my laptops usually boot up fresh daily. A couple of them boot up slow so I'm thinking about just using hibernate overnight, though I use suspend throughout the day.
How do you handle down time with your desktops/laptops? Or do you shut them down at all?
Thanks.

I'm using solar panels + battery so I shut down my computer whenever I don't use it. Saving energy ...

I always shutdown. By this I can make sure that filesystem checks and check-counts are due at boot time.

I suspend for weeks on end, then occasionally reboot to clear things out.

Same as Jerry. Desktop was up for 8 days on suspension at night and when I am out of the house. Shutdown when I went away for the weekend.

I thought there would be more hibernating than shutting down, but MX boots wicked fast, about twice as fast for me as Kubuntu 18.04 for instance, so shutting down would make sense when it boots so quick. I found where someone on the board here had instructions for MX to hibernate and I tried that and it works, but bootup doesn't take but a few seconds longer, which again is impressive.

hibernate works here, but its not significantly faster than a reboot, and shutdown is slower.

i suspend by closing the laptop lid. eventually the graphics will become corrupted slightly, and I'll reboot then.

Same here, not seeing a big advantage in hibernate.

I shutdown and even cut the power to the system. Once almost had a fire because a printer decided it was its end of life, it's a good thing I noticed. I don't want something like that to happen at night or when I am not at home for a longer period of time (read: more than an hour).
