What kind of release cycle MX Linux has?

#1 Post by ekeimaja » Sun May 27, 2018 4:47 am

I have been searching information about release cycle of MX Linux from last week, and I haven't found anything, so I ask here.

Is the release cycle yearly, as version number depends from year, so will the MX Linux-18 be released in this year? Or does the release cycle follow Debian's stable branch, so next MX Linux will be released when Debian 10 (Buster) is released? Or is MX changed to rolling release as antiX is currently? (Is antiX even RR, if fixed version numbers are used in releases? This confuses me really much now.)

it could be nice to get this information somewhere to home page so the newcomers as I can find it easily.
Desktop: AMD FX-4350, 12 Gb RAM, NVIDIA GTX660 (MX Linux-17.1)
Laptops: Asus R510L, Intel i5-4200U, 8Gb RAM, Nvidia GeForce 820M & Intel HD Graphics 4400 (Debian 8)
Asus Eee 1005P, Intel Atom N450, 2 Gb RAM, Intel GMA3150 (MX Linux-17.1)

We release annually, and use that year for the release number. Because we work closely with our sister distro antiX, and track Xfce developments as well, the release comes toward the end of the year. This late release date goes back to the beginning of Mepis, from which we both originally derive.

You're right that we should have this info easily discoverable, thanks!

AntiX is only rolling if you choose to use Debian Testing or Unstable as the base during installation (the installer gives you a choice). If you keep to the default Debian Stable, it's a fixed release distro.

The folks here can give you more details about MX in particular. Debian Stretch has 2 more years full support and if like the past couple of Debian Stable releases will have 4 years more total LTS support. The folks here at MX are very good at giving support and help. They have been that way since I joined 7 years ago. Hardly a better community anywhere. You are in good hands and will find plenty of help as well as Debian being one of the most reliable bases of any Linux distribution.

Back to OP's question: we now have the information linked off the menu (Products) on the Home page of the website.

https://mxlinux.org/release-cycle

Section 1.4 of the Users Manual covers the more general question of support length.

Nice, good addition! Quick feedback, is there a typo in the final line, "Although it MX Linux is always based on the Stable version of Debian, packagers continually backport newer software versions to the main repository."

As you can see from the current 17.1 version, we may also put out an point update any time we decide it's warranted. For example, if xfce 4.14. was released in July, and testing proved that it was stable, we would put out a point release incorporating the new xfce, along with a guide to migration for present MX 17 users if that proves necessary (mostly just artwork and default app changes).
