X is bloat for a remotely managed server. The repository servers don't have it installed.
But I don't run one of those as my main desktop.

Are the repo servers minimal Debian net installs?

The main one, which has been around since 2007 is running RedHat, because that's what the hosting service has been using all this time.
The two mirrors I control are running debian netinstall images that the company hosting the VPS provides. Easier for me to manage what I'm more familiar with.

And remember, Dedoimedo doesn't write for the crowd running Linux for several years,
he writes about how to attract new users from Windows to Linux.
Even though MX is handsome that is not the reason I use it.
Pretty is for sunsets, landscapes, birds, cats, etc.

My raison d'être for using MX is its incredible versatility--it just works. On everything I've ever thrown it on. Never met a wifi chipset it wasn't able to detect--in the background--and connect with my ancient Belkin router OOTB. It's easy to update, especially with apt-get. You can add other debian-based repositories to it (such as Sparky's). And the modified Xfce interface is easy to get used to, doesn't get in the way, and doesn't seem to bog down the limited system resources of even the most decrepit Atom n270 netbooks--even with just 1 GB of RAM. It also works great on my 12 GB i5 notebook.
