M12 11.9.92

#1 Post by Jerry3904 »

Warren has uploaded a minor revision:
Hi Jerry,

I uploaded 11.9.92.

I fixed the CD init to use Plymouth.

Also did some minor tweaks so 32 and 64 have the same installed packages.

Best,

Warren

Downloaded the 64 bit version.
Ran mdsum--OK
Burned to 2G USB drive with unetbootin--OK
Inserted USB drive into computer at 6:38PM Anchorage time
Booted OK--Fast Too.
Installed to HDD
Failed to restart---Same as other previous betas
Hard reset
Booted into version 11.9.92--up & running by 6:50 PM Anchorage time--that is pretty darn quick, I think.
Haven't played with it much yet.
I checked synaptics, & the bug where after Mepis is selected and then checked again, prefer highest version
is automatically selected by the OS. If you then reselect Mepis, it stays as desired. I have reported this before--only a very minor irritant.

Thanks Warren

11.9.92 32-bit on Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Li 1818:
There are still 17 ghost drives in KinfoCenter. Installer freezes when finished and no automatic reboot.
Apart from that, M12 feels slightly more polished for every new release.
Haven't started testing yet, this was only a few first impressions.
The different help screens and tips in the installer need some serious proofreading. Typos like "Aafter you reboot" shouldn't be there.
And what happened to "Press F1 for help" when booting the live-DVD?

- 64-bit download from U of Crete mirror
- Loaded to USB flash with isohybrid/dd method
- Got missing media message on boot...failed
- Then added 'fromhd' cheat and booted fine...very fast
- Installed to HDD fine

Experiencing the same things with the non proper reboot. But it spits out the disk, and the reboot button does the rest.

Just took the 32 bit version for a quick spin on a USB stick that was made by Unetbootin. Used on a Dell Inspiron 1525, 2 GB RAM. Live Disk only, not installed.

No problems booting up.
Wireless connected and worked just fine.
Bluetooth mouse connected and worked just fine.
Any of the major programs that I would used opened and functioned.
Runs smooth and snappy.

One thing that needs to be updated, is in Iceweasel, the link to the community or forums is not correct. This may have been stated on previous version of the alpha/betas.

I downloaded and installed (HD install, not VB) both the 32- and 64-bit versions of .92. No problems (except for the intermitant crash when exiting the Live version; it happened 1 of the 2 installs), I then installed my normal suite of apps on both; again no problems and everything seems to be working.

The graphic while installing the live programs was a surprise (but I'm not sure it is better than the text scrolling up it covers). Installation of the live versions was very quick!

All installs were done from ROM keys written by the Mepis System program in the betas. That is a good program for making M12 keys (it won't do other distros). And, of course, I checked the MD5 of the downloaded files first.

Well, 11.9.91 suddenly went bottom up (not encouraging), so I burned a DVD of this one and installed it. install all OK, though still hangs on exit from minstall, and reboot dumped me at a login prompt though LiveDVD did fine. I installed sgfxi and an Nvidia driver.

As with 11.9.91, the new driver seems to block plymouth somehow, so I get a minimal Debian screen during boot.

To get the Mepis 12 plymouth splash to show up when the proprietary nvidia driver is installed, I need to add the vga=xxx cheatcode (vga=791 in my case).

Edit the /etc/default/grub file and add the vga=xxx cheat to either the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX or GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line. Run update-grub afterward.
