You mean like the MX Time Settings in the menu?
Production: 5.10, MX-23 Xfce, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 16 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Personal: Lenovo X1 Carbon with MX-23 Fluxbox and Windows 10

I think he meant the default installation off of the Live Media.

I mean the live installer of media or ISO , the mx-installer .
Installing with july snapshot ISO has behavior change with time setting .

With March Mx17.1 iso installer , during the install ,
Configure clock section
Choosing "System clock uses LOCAL" and Selecting time zone
immediately will show current time and zone display in the panel .
It does not make any changes to hardware clock after post install .

But installing with July snapshot of Mx17.1 iso has different behavior.
It does not behave as it was .Further noticed that it changes system
hardware clock time to UTC after connecting to internet.
It looks like syncs the clock after connecting to internet and forcing system clock to UTC .

I feel original behavior is perfect .It is since Mepis days

Instead changing installer behavior, provide any flexibility with the MX Time Settings tool as a post install/boot application or tweak and user can tweak to their preference

ah, that's not the installer. that's a side effect of how snapshots are built, one of the differences between the snapshots and the official iso (march was an official iso)

never really noticed it before, but we will take a look.

***at least I think so...research required, although I'm not seeing a difference in the clock settings script between the march iso and the snapshot***

I diagnosed installation of 1) MX-17.1_x64.iso (March) and 2) MX-17.1_x64 snapshot (my personnel snapshot after all updates)

With both installation I choose (x) System clock uses LOCAL and Timezone Asia/Jakarta

After installation, reboot and checked the terminal output with command timedatectl
I disabled the Lan so that it will not be network connected and do not syncs the time

1) MX-17.1_x64.iso (March)
sivaraj@sivaraj:~
$ timedatectl
Local time: Mon 2018-07-30 12:19:28 WIB
Universal time: Mon 2018-07-30 05:19:28 UTC
RTC time: Mon 2018-07-30 12:19:28
Time zone: Asia/Jakarta (WIB, +0700)
Network time on: yes
NTP synchronized: yes
RTC in local TZ: yes

Warning: The system is configured to read the RTC time in the local time zone.
This mode can not be fully supported. It will create various problems
with time zone changes and daylight saving time adjustments. The RTC
time is never updated, it relies on external facilities to maintain it.
If at all possible, use RTC in UTC by calling

2) MX-17.1_x64 snapshot

sivaraj@sivaraj:~
$ timedatectl
Local time: Mon 2018-07-30 19:36:40 WIB
Universal time: Mon 2018-07-30 12:36:40 UTC
RTC time: Mon 2018-07-30 12:36:41
Time zone: Asia/Jakarta (WIB, +0700)
Network time on: yes
NTP synchronized: yes
RTC in local TZ: no

There is a difference <RTC in local TZ: no >

Looks like installer did not handle the LOCAL selection properly with snapshot installation

Thanks...I forgot we have moved to a new installer, although I didn't think we changed anything in the timezone settings...will investigate.

It looks this Local time setting issue is not yet fixed with the latest oct snapshot installer.
MX17.1 march release installer works right.
With MX17.1-March release , during install time, choosing the <System clock uses LOCAL> and selecting <Timezone> will immediately update the system panel clock with respect to the computer RTC time .
During this timezone selection ,we can see this time update and change of time display in the system tray Orage panel clock

But this does not work with snapshot iso installation.
It appears that it changes or assumes the RTC time to UTC

Below is the timedatectl command output after restarting the fresh install
$ timedatectl
Local time: Wed 2018-10-17 19:14:18 WIB
Universal time: Wed 2018-10-17 12:14:18 UTC
RTC time: Wed 2018-10-17 12:14:18
Time zone: Asia/Jakarta (WIB, +0700)
Network time on: yes
NTP synchronized: yes
RTC in local TZ: no

It has to set the < RTC in local TZ: yes > if <System clock uses LOCAL> was selected during install time
and should show RTC time => Local time

This works right with MX17.1-March iso .

I need to issue the command < timedatectl set-local-rtc 1 > to set it right everytime

Ok, got it I think. and not as complicated as I feared.

the root problem is that the new installer isn't creating the /etc/adjtime file correctly. Since the file controls whether LOCAL is used or not for the system clock, the tool that sets the times defaults to UTC.

I think we can fix that easy enough.

Thanks for the bug report!

Ok, just sent an updated installer up to be placed in the repo. I think it fixed the problem (at least in my tests).

once it hits the repos, anyone can test by

Code: Select all

apt-get install mx-installer
from any of the isos before running an install.
