best alternative to irfanview from the repos

#1 Post by mmikeinsantarosa » Tue Jun 17, 2014 12:10 am

What altternatives are there in the repos (for antix mx14) that are similar to irfanview? I need something for screen grabs using the mouse to capture a selected area.

thanks
Mike

Do you mean you want software to create a screen grab? If so, you already have it. Just press the 'Print Screen' key, or select Screenshot from the Accessories section of the Whisker menu.

If you already know that, but want to edit an image you have already captured, a simple program to do that is Pinta, available from the repos. For more advanced editing Gimp is available both from the repos and from the meta-installer.

There is no one program that has all the capability of the wonderful Irfanview; you may have to install more than one thing depending on exactly what you are trying to achieve. Ask again with more specific detail if necessary.

what I'm kooking for is something I can hold the mouse button down and select an area on the screen and just capture that and hopefully have that selected piece saved to a file.

I just tried a print screen and well duh the system can do that by default.

Way cool!

Mepis/mx14 rocks

Glad you got sorted.

For future reference it is well worth having a look at the MX documents, available by clicking the button at the top right of this page. There is a lot of information there to get you started. For example, on the very first page there is a section titled 'Tips & Tricks' that tells you about keyboard short-cuts, including what the Print Screen key does.

OP has solved his problem. Just for reference shutter is a great screen capture program and includes a powerful editing tool. I am not in MX-14 at the moment so I am not sure it is in the repos.

OP, please mark this solved.

For completeness, Shutter is available in the standard repos, although the included tool appears to have met his needs.
