Mepis 11 - firefox will not load

#1 Postby ptlivestock » Sat May 28, 2016 2:54 pm

i have just downloaded via synaptic the latest recent upgrade for Firefox

It downloads but appears to not complete the install. I am not certain!!! Having done the download 3 times I cannot get Firefox to start up.

There is one other upgradable item available being kde-servicemenu-extract-and-compress that is upgradable but it depends on pxz and that is reported as not installable. I am uncertain as to whether this has some bearing on the situation.

On trying to upgrade my repository index I am getting failures on a number of FTP or Http and cannot complete the operation. It has me asking has something radical changed with regard to the support for Mepis 11.

PS this is coming from MX15 on another machine and I was pondering whether its advisable to consider switching to MX15 on my main machine

Ah.. I note there is a recent topic on support for Mepis 11. It reinforces my opinion that perhaps I should take the MX15 route to ease the stress ;-)

So currently I am without Firefox on and don't relish the thought of lots of time consuming file transfers and backups etc to do a clean install and reformat. I have a second drive available on my machine for the backup but before I start, can someone advise me can MX15 be simply loaded over the top of Mepis 11 or is it safer to do a clean new install

Regards
Peter

The latest Firefox requires GTK 3 instead of GTK 2 now, which is not available for MEPIS 11. Those packages need to be pulled from the repo, and Firefox "sunsetted" for M11.

pxz is available in the M11 test repository, though: http://main.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/testr ... est/p/pxz/

I installed MX 15 over MEPIS 12, saving my home folder, without any problems. Since MX 15 doesn't have any KDE settings, it won't mess those up. If you want a preconfigured KDE with MX 15 that's close to the old MEPIS style, there's my unofficial KDE remaster available (which will override your basic KDE settings on install, so you'll have to restore them.)

The latest Firefox ESR 38.8.0 works fine in M11. It's a good alternative without sudden surprises.

No, I didn't. The 38 series is more stable on my M11 than the later versions. Don't know why.

Thanks, mmike.
Using it now ... seems no different from 38.8.0 so far, but I guess it's best to use the latest version.

P.S. I still use M11 daily.
