Mepis 11 support -- for how much longer?

#1 Post by kmathern » Tue Jan 12, 2016 6:27 pm

I just noticed Stevo announcing an update for the M11 Xscreensaver (http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/viewtop ... 60#p378260), which got me to wondering how much longer we will be supporting Mepis 11.

Debian Squeeze LTS support is supposed to end on the 6th of February: https://wiki.debian.org/LTS/FAQ#What_is ... eze_LTS.3F. At that time I think the Squeeze repos will be removed from the Debian servers. They won't go away entirely, they'll be moved to the http://archive.debian.org/ server, but if someone wants to keep using M11 they'll need to make some changes to their sources.list.

I don't think we should/could support M11 more than Debian supports the underlying system, I think it was always understood that the support should mirror the Debian one.

That's been clear from the start.
Yes, even I am dishonest. Not in many ways, but in some. Forty-one, I think it is.

Yes, this must be the right time to drop the support. Even I, a diehard M11 fan, am preparing to move completely to MX-15. Don't think there will be many users left when they skip the LTS updates.

My virtual machines for M11 and 12 haven't been able to access Warren's official MEPIS repos at least since yesterday--has anyone else noticed this?

Nope, didn't notice...MX-15 rolled over my Mepis 12 beta partitions finally.

I thought, what am I missing in MX-15 that I had in Mepis11.92 fully updated?

Mepis 11.9.92 (the Mepis 12 beta) is based on Wheezy, and should still be supported for another two years or so, the same would apply to MX-14.

What's losing support is Squeeze based Mepis 11, the most recent version of that were the SimplyMEPIS-1.5G_11.0.12_xx isos which were released in Jan. of 2012.

I get a big OOPS when updating the package lists in M11.
