I'm fine using the 179.xxx driver...this started just out of curiosity. I wanted to see how a couple of distros worked, but then every one I tried didn't have a cursor. What gets me is I remember running Mepis 11 on DVD, and it used to have a cursor. I mean, I was running 8.5 until about a year ago (I think, but my memory's getting pretty unreliable), and there was a cursor when I installed Mepis 11.

Ah well...

I wonder if you might be getting confused with the M12 beta's versioning (i.e. SimplyMEPIS-1.5G_11.9.92) and thinking it's Mepis 11?

The Mepis 12 alphas & betas use the nouveau driver for all nvidia videocards.

Mepis 11 uses the xorg "nv" driver in a live session for your FX 5500 card and also for the GeForce4 MX-440 card that you used to have. I think Mepis 8.0 & 8.5 also used the "nv" driver in a live session.

Mepis 11 did come with the nvidia 260.19.21 proprietary driver preinstalled, but your FX 5500 & GeForce4 MX-440 cards wouldn't have been able to use it. There was some code in the init scripts that detected if an older card was present, and if there was it loaded the "nv" driver instead.

The xorg "nv" driver was removed from the repos during the transition from Squeeze -> Wheezy.

Nope...I have both 11 (11.0.12) and 12 (11.9.92) on DVD...

When I installed Mepis 11, I ran sgfxi for the driver, but as I remember, the live session to do the install was just the "default"...

If you're the booting it from the same entry in the boot selections menu Mepis 11 (11.0.12) should work the same in a live session as it did a year or so ago.

I would think so...

As far as I know, nothing has changed. That's what has puzzled me most. This SHOULD work, but...

Oi...
(And I'm not even Jewish)

Oh, if it matters, things seemed to take a long time on DVD...booting to desktop, shutting down, opening anything.

So, I've just updated from Windows 8 to Windows 10 and my cursor has disappeared.
It does show for 1 minute when rebooted, but then disappears. Very strange?? I have no idea how to fix it and I'm not a fan of touch screen. Can anyone assist me (in simple language - I'm a bit of a techphobe) Thanks.

Ask at a windows user forum. This forum supports linux.
