Ah, yes. I forgot about uget. I don't find it quite as versatile as Fatrat, but it's certainly a workable substitute.

I tried SMTune .. It couldn't play videos and reported the error as: It wasn't possible to find the url for this video.

http://www.smtube.org/
15.8.0

I installed it via the MX software installer
Acer Aspire M3800, Intel Pentium dual-core E6600, Intel 4 Series Graphics, Intel Audio, 4 GB Ram, XFCE 4, MX15 Fusion. Lenovo G560 Laptop - 4G Ram, Dual-Pentium, MX15 Fusion.

Did you try Minitube 2.4? It doesn't have the phonon4qt5 dependency and it works with the latest YouTube iteration -- at least it does for me.

EDIT:

FWIW, I activated the experimental repository and installed Minitube 2.5 from a downloaded .deb file. The gdebi package installer brought in a ton of new packages (including phonon4qt5) and updated a few others. Afterward, Minitube 2.5 would launch and show YouTube videos in the menu list, but it would not play any of them. Also, a popup appeared in the KDE panel stating that NVidia was broken and the system was reverting to something else. Not good.

I removed Minitube 2.5 and re-installed Minitube 2.4. Same result: Minitube would not play YouTube videos, although I could still play them in web browsers and other multimedia players such as Kaffeine and VLC still played video files. It seemed that Minitube was FUBAR because of the upgrades that gdebi brought in, and there was no way to fix it. So I had no other choice besides restoring /root from a backup partition image.

Recommendation: Stick with Minitube 2.4 with Wheezy. I'm waiting until MX-15 comes out before attempting another Minitube 2.5 install.

Thanks everyone for all the info.

Joany .. "Did you try Minitube 2.4?"

I don't think I did, but I might give it a go later on.

FWIW, I'm using an earlier version of SMtube (version 15.5.17) from the standard Community Repository -- not the Test repository -- and it works well. This version was compiled with Qt 4.8.6 (using 4.8.6).

However, I doubt you can revert to version 15.5.17 because the installed dependencies are probably incompatible.

The qt5 version of SMPlayer was an MX 15 package only--so what's going on there?

The qt5 version of SMPlayer had that bug, but it's been fixed in upstream source-- well as in the test repo qt4 rebuild. Run

Code: Select all

su -c 'aptitude install smplayer=14.9.0+svn7042-1mcr120+1'
