Writer's font menu
Re: Writer's font menu
I ran fc-list. I put the output into a table, and I sorted the table. All but 2 fonts of fc-list's output are in Writer's font menu. Those 2 missing fonts are Dingbats and Open Symbols. I see no reason for those 2 missing fonts not to have gotten into Writer's font menu. Has anybody an idea re the source of the problem?
Re: Writer's font menu
Correction: The 2 missing fonts are Dingbats and Standard Symbols. Sorry.

Re: Writer's font menu
Did you check the permissions of the Dingbats and Standard Symbols fonts? In all places where they occur.

Re: Writer's font menu
Henry:
The permissions on Dingbats and Standard Symbols is the same as that on the other fonts that are in Writer's font menu. Those permissions are:
Owner can Read and Write
Group can Read
Others can Read
Something must be wrong with those 2 fonts.

Re: Writer's font menu
Or the gsfonts package. One solution I've seen when people are trying to fix ghostscript font bugs, is creating a symbolic link from the font to ghostscript. Some experimenting must be done to find the right places to link.Something must be wrong with those 2 fonts.

Re: Writer's font menu
My first thought in this direction would be to create a softlink from to
Code: Select all
/usr/share/ghostscript/8.71/Resource/Font/Dingbats/
Code: Select all
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/
Production: 4.15.0-1-amd64, MX-17.1, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 8 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Testing: AAO 722: 4.15.0-1-386. MX-17.1, AMD C-60 APU, 4 GB
Personal: XPS 13, 4.18.0-19.3-liquorix, 4 GB

Re: Writer's font menu
I have some good news to report. I will report first what did NOT work:
This stuff did NOT work:
I launched the Konsole and logged in as root. I then created these 2 soft links: (1) /home/bb/.fonts/d0500001.afm and (2) /home/bb/.fonts/d0500001.pfb
Each of those links pointed to the corresponding file in /usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/
Each link file shows root as owner. I clicked on the link file ending in .pfb. I got this message: "Could not read font." I then launched Writer, and as I expected, Dingbats was not in the font menu.
This stuff DID work:
Logged into the Konsole as root, I executed this command: ln -s /usr/share/ghostscript/9.02/Resource/Font/Dingbats /home/bb/.fonts/Dingbats
I clicked on the link file, and the Dingbats font displayed. So far; so good. I rebooted the computer, and then launched Writer. By golly, Dingbats is in the font menu, and I inserted some Dingbats characters into a Writer document. That procedure worked for Dingbats; so it also should work for Standard Symbols.
Thanks to Henry, Jerry3904, and everyone else who offered suggestions as to the source of the problem and a workaround.

Re: Writer's font menu
That's great, but what a hassle, huh?! For most users, it "just works" so I guess you are just *special.*

I'm fairly certain that this solution will come in handy for others. Thanks for the update (with solution) for your problem.
Yes, even I am dishonest. Not in many ways, but in some. Forty-one, I think it is.
