The Dingbats are included in the ghostscript package and are automatically installed in the right place.
The OP didn't say which version of Dingbats he has. Wrong version in the wrong place?

The gsfonts package only includes fonts with names like a010033l and ending with .afm, .pfm, or .pfb
If there is a font named Dingbats in that folder, it's in the wrong place.

Henry:

The files d0500001.afm (and .pfb and .pfm) are Dingbats. At least that's what Dolphin identifies them as when I put the cursor on the .afm file. It identifies the font family as Dingbats.

OK,
Do you have the other folder /usr/share/ghostscript/8.71 (or other number)/Resource/Font/Dingbats.

Then we have the same, but yours isn't working. Hmm..
Don't know what I should have tried first? Maybe re-installing ghostscript?

Henry:

If I understand you, you are saying that the Dingbats font files are in the right place on my machine, but for some reason or other, Dingbats is not getting into Writer's font menu. Is that what you are saying?

Yes, that's what I have. Haven't done anything special to make it work.
Also, there are some Dingbats in /usr/share/fonts/X11/encodings/adobe-dingbats.enc.gz
Didn't see them at first.

Do you have the gsfonts-X11 package installed? Going through everything to find the difference.
