Writer's font menu

#1 Post by wtb » Sat Aug 16, 2014 3:20 pm

I'm running Mepis 11. My /usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts folder has the Dingbats font, but Writer’s font menu lacks that font. What must I do to get the Dingbats font into Writer’s font menu? Thanks for your help.

Bill

If it were me, I would start by doing a websearch on libreoffice import fonts to see if the answer were already easily accessible.

It's possible that Dingbats is present but not installed - or installed but disabled in system settings (yes, you can do that if you don't want to see a particular font).
Try Settings -> System Settings -> System Administration -> Font Installer
MSI 970A-G43 MB, AMD FX-6300 (six core), 16GB RAM, GeForce 730, Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD, Seagate Barracuda XT 3TB

To Jerry3904:

FYI, I did search to see if an answer were readily available before posting on this site. I searched the internet and this site. My search terms did not include the word "import", but I tried several terms containing "libreoffice" and "font". I spent an hour or so reading answers to questions re fonts and libreoffice. Nothing that I read answered my query.

If I were you, I would not assume that everyone is a complete novice at linux or Writer or the proper use of online forums. In 2007, I wrote a book using OpenOffice's Writer. I then had a problem with Writer producing a PDF file of a document containing a Type1 font that I had bought. So I went online to a Writer forum and posted a question. After getting several responses along the lines of yours, a nice European fellow told me to send him my font. I did, and he tested it. He got the same results I got; so he tried a different route to creating a PDF file from a Writer document. That route worked; so he then explained to me the route that worked for him. I used that route, and it worked for me too. In other words, Writer's normal way of building a PDF file contained a bug. The European fellow came up with a work-around. That fellow's name is Johan Vromans of Squirrel Consultancy, the Netherlands. My book's acknowledgments section thanks Johan for his kind help.

As you can see, I'm not exactly a novice at this stuff!

Point taken. It helps us know how to respond if you tell us where you are starting from so we understand that despite your being new to the Forum you are not in fact a Novice.

I searched on the terms indicated, and found a lot of hits on how to import fonts into LO, so just meant to report that in my own case that is where I would start and that it seemed to produce good suggestions on the first page.

Thank you for your prompt reply and for suggesting that my searches include the word "import".

Half art, half magic. (Did the addition of import to the search terms help?)
Yes, even I am dishonest. Not in many ways, but in some. Forty-one, I think it is.

My Dingbats are in /usr/share/ghostscript/8.71/Resource/Font/Dingbats and in /usr/share/ghostscript/9.02/Resource/Font/Dingbats
M 11, LibreOffice 3.4.3. They are working fine with Writer.
