Libreoffice footnotes -- macro?

#1 Post by Jerry3904 » Tue Mar 11, 2014 10:42 am

I am starting a book-length project, and want to avoid the problems I had on my last one with footnotes. LO does footnotes pretty well now, but they can't be exported or even copy/pasted as a group to edit or move (e.g., from one chapter to the end), which can be a major headache during editing and layout.

The strategy I am considering is to place a footnote temporarily within a pair of braces, like this:
{Nobody, Knows. 3023. The past is gone. Halleluia:Nopressneeded.}
Then at any point I could collect the footnotes and dump them into a dedicated page/document. If that is the best strategy, then I need a method to pull all the brace material and dump it into a "Footnote" document.

So, my questions: 1) does anyone see a better way to do it? I DDG'd without much success. 2) If I use an macro inside LO, how does that work? 3) Could I use a script outside LO, so just identify the file and pull all the strings between braces > footnotes.txt? Be good to ignore duplicates for 2) and 3).

Thanks for any help.

A suggestion: why not avoid the problem(s) and skip using footnotes altogether; just use endnotes with identifiers in the text
Endnotes themselves are placed at the end of the document/book. An identifier, f.i. like [13] is placed in the text. It references endnote 13.

That's how I did it, writing the (never published) Xandros User Manual in StarOffice.
Jeez, that is a long time ago.... 2003/4....

That's actually what I do (should have said "endnotes"), but all the problems remain the same.

Figured out a better way: use LO as it is, print last page to file, open resulting PDF and copy and paste into a new LO document.

At that point I have a complete set of endnotes that I can edit individually or en masse.
